Which Claude certification should you take first?
Four credentials exist: two foundations-level technical exams, an associate exam for non-engineers, and a professional architect exam. Here is how to pick between them in five minutes.

There are four Claude certifications published on the official program page: Claude Certified Associate – Foundations (CCAO-F), Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F), Claude Certified Architect – Professional (CCAR-P) and Claude Certified Developer – Foundations (CCDV-F). They test different jobs, so the right first choice is a question about your role rather than your seniority.
If you do not write code: CCAO-F
The associate credential is for people who use Claude as part of their job — analysis, operations, marketing, support, management. The skills that matter are prompting that produces repeatable results, working with long documents, verifying output, and knowing where the model should not be trusted.
If you build software: CCDV-F
The developer credential is about integration: SDK configuration, structured output, streaming, tool definitions, error handling and testing systems that are not deterministic. It rewards hands-on practice far more than reading.
If you design systems: start with CCAR-F
Architect – Foundations is described officially as a technical exam for solution architects building production applications with Claude. What we can confirm on the official program page is the exam name and code, the two delivery modes and the retake policy. The fee, question count and duration sit behind a partner login, so we leave them out rather than repeat a figure we cannot re-check.
Architect – Professional is a step beyond that, aimed at senior architects who own enterprise integration, security, auditability and cost governance. Most people should not start there.
A five-minute decision
- Do you write production code? If no, CCAO-F.
- Do you own the design of the system rather than a feature in it? If yes, CCAR-F.
- Are you accountable for enterprise constraints and audit? Consider CCAR-P after CCAR-F.
- Otherwise CCDV-F. It is the most immediately useful if you are shipping features this quarter.
